AMASSOMA: SOUTHERN IJAW LEADER, TIWEI DESCRIBES KILLINGS AS EXTRA-JUDICIAL

• Advises Dickson to be cautious.

A former Executive Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government area, and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa state, Chief Timipa Tiwei Orunimighe has condemned the killing of unarmed protesters in Amassoma.

He made the condemnation while responding to questions from Newsmen.

According to Chief Tiwei, the Nigerian Police is maintained by tax payers money to protect lives and property, noting that the spate of killings across different parts of the country calls for caution by security agencies in parts of the country that have witnessed relative peace in the face of daunting security challenges.

He noted that in a civil society, the Police should be more civil in handling issues of protests and civil disturbances.

Chief Timpa Tiwei noted that he does not believe that the Government deployed the Police to Amassoma with the aim of killing innocent people, but that the over-zealousness and unprofessionalism of some Policemen may have resulted in the loss of lives.

He called on the Commissioner of Police in the state CP. Don Awona to immediately investigate the circumstances leading to the killing of protesters at Amassoma.

He expressed displeasure that the people of Amassoma have lost loved ones and thousands are now internally displaced in neighbouring communities with little or no life-line for survival.

Chief Tiwei also called on the Bayelsa state Government to ensure the return of peace to the university community of Amassoma and its environs, advising that the Government should be more circumspect in handling the matter to avoid further escalation.
