Malaysia's King abdicated on Sunday, putting an end to speculation over the course of days.

Announced Mohammed V, Sultan of Kelantan, his abdication from the throne and the position of "Alojong (King of Malaysia), the fifteenth" in an official statement published by the Secretary of the Council of the sultans and Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.

According to a statement published by the National Palace "Istana Negara", the "King may be prepared to return to Kelantan ... to be with the state government, and particularly the people of Kelantan to protect the state and its development for the benefit of its people."

It is noteworthy that the position of the king in Malaysia is largely ceremonial, where most of the powers of government are in the hands of the prime minister, and the government.

The rulers of the country's nine states choose the king for a five-year term.

Speculation about Mohamed V's abdication rose after a meeting of governors held a few days ago.

The announcement of the abdication comes only two years after Sultan took office in December 2016.

It is not clear why the throne was abdicated at this early time.

The King has been on vacation for treatment since 2 November 2018, and reports have been received about his marriage of Miss Russia, Oksana Vojvodina, in Moscow.
