Most commercial 3D printers that use extrusion can usually only print with one material at a time and when they use multiple materials and colors, the process slows down.
This will change from now that researchers have developed a new technique, called multimatter 3D printing, which allows a single printhead to switch between multiple different materials.
The technique developed uses high-speed pressure valves, to achieve rapid, continuous and uninterrupted switching, which can change up to 50 times in a second.
In terms of applications, this printing technique can use reactive materials such as epoxies, silicones and biolinks and materials with disparate properties can be easily integrated to create soft robots with rigid and flexible elements.
