Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said only Syrian government forces should be on the southern border of the country. The area is adjacent to Jordan and Israel.

Syrian rebels spread their authority in the region. While Israel intensified air strikes this month it was driven by Iranian rocket fire from the area to the Golan Heights.

"Of course, the withdrawal of all non-Syrian troops should be done on a reciprocal basis, this should be a two-way street," Lavrov said at a joint press conference in Moscow with Jose Condungua Pacheco, a fellow from Mozambique.

"The results of this work should continue and this should always be the case when Syrian Republican representatives stand on the Syrian border with Israel," Lavrov said as quoted by Al Arabiya on Tuesday (29/5/2018).

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has reported the movement of Syrian troops to the south. While state media said leaflets had been deployed in rebel-held areas, urging insurgents to accept government power. This could be a sign of a military attack.
