“Fast-Track” Deportation Threatens Due Process

Enforcing our nation’s laws is of the utmost importance. But so, too, is respecting the dignity and rights of all who live in the land of the free.

The real problem of course is that nobody (neither of the two major political parties anyway) want to actually fix the immigration system. Yes, I agree that borders should be secure and that in general people should not be allowed to stay illegally. But if you are going to remove illegal immigrants then it should be done as soon as possible, not years down the road after they establish a life and a family here.

Also, there's no reason the immigration system can't be made more efficient. I mean it is absurd how long it takes to process immigration paperwork. Even in cases of marriage, you are talking 8 months or more before your spouse can arrive in the U.S. legally. There does not need to be vast, complicated and arbitrary requirements for immigration. A background check and perhaps some limit on when you would be eligible for public assistance is all that is needed. The longest part of the immigration process should be the time it takes to get a background check from your country of origin. In some cases that is quite long but in most cases it is the U.S. immigration system that is the hold-up.
