Chicago Baby Killer Gets 48 Months Probation

A Chicago Muslim woman, Mubashra Uddin, daughter of Pakistani Muslim immigrants, pleaded guilty to killing her baby. She only received 48 months probation for killing her baby (plus 603 days credit for time served in the Cook County Jail).

Let me give you the facts of the story. Ms. Uddin when she was 19 hid her pregnancy from her Pakistani Muslim parents because she knew that they wouldn’t approve, according to assistant state attorney Patrick Turnock. She hid her pregnancy by wearing clothes that would conceal the pregnancy.

When Ms. Uddin’s pregnancy came to term, she had a seven pound 11 ounce little girl. This occurred in the room she shared with her little sister. When she heard her mother approach the room she realized her best course of action would be to drop the baby from the window of their high rise apartment.

A man found the baby alive in the grass of the Uptown Chicago neighborhood high-rise and immediately asked the building security to call an ambulance. The baby’s injuries were too extensive and she died at the hospital shortly afterward. The baby’s death was ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma.

The police investigators went to Ms Uddin’s apartment and found blood in her bedroom, on the sheets and on a pair of scissors. She later made multiple confessions on video. She was soon after arrested for the homicide and charged with first-degree murder.

Commentary

One has to wonder why Ms. Uddin was worried about her religion of peace loving parents finding out about her pregnancy. Certainly they would have considered options such as raising the child as their own, adoption or getting a free abortion at Planned Parenthood. :/

Countless young women in this country get pregnant out of wedlock everyday but typically they don’t murder their babies to protect themselves from their families wrath. Could this speak to a cultural issue rather than a confused 19-year-old young woman? I’ll let you decide that for yourself.

What do you think about the sentence? Was Ms. Uddin a victim of her families religious intolerance, a cold blooded killer or perhaps a combination of both. Does 4 years probation seem like a slap on the wrist for killing an innocent baby regardless of mitigating circumstances?
