Former football star George Weah climbs to power in Liberia !

In the second round of the presidential election in Liberia, George Weah, a 51-year-old former football star won and became the President of Liberia.

According to the Electoral Commission, 61.5 percent of voters voted for Weah (Coalition for Democratic Change), while 38.5 percent of voters supported his rival, Josep Boacai.

"You know, I was already in competitions and they where very tough, but in the end I celebrated. So I know that Boakai can not beat me. I have people on my side," said Weah.

The second round was scheduled for November 7, but the party of the third-ranked candidate appealed, because of "mass fraud and irregularities", so the Supreme Court postponed election, but Weah's supporters remained calm despite all complications, while Weah in that time met with many West African leaders.

Weah, who was born in the Monrovian slums, become famous in the 1990s, when he played football in Europe. He played for Milan, Monaco, PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City, and was the only African who won the golden ball (1995). He has collected 60 appearances for the national team.

George Weah is equally well known in his homeland for his humanitarian contributions to the poor, since he financed schools throughout the country.

After being elected for Senator in 2014, he carefully built the image of a professional, serious politician, although the Liberian elite complains that he is not qualified to lead the country.

Weah's key supporters were mainly young and poor, who are looking forward to a better times under the sports star.

Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world and still struggling with the effects of ebola.
