Red Cross President praises humanitarian corridors in Syria

BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:20 A.M.) - President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, commended the role of the de-escalation zones in solving the humanitarian crisis in Syria's Eastern Ghouta, speaking on the sidelines of the Moscow security conference on Wednesday.

According to Maurer, "we need to have access for neutral and partial humanitarian organisations like ICRC, in order to bring humanitarian assistance to those people who are trapped in between the front lines."

"The humanitarian corridors, at a certain moment, were used by people, which shows that they came to the conclusion that they were useful tools to get out of the besieged situation of Eastern Ghouta," Maurer added.

"It is indeed a very complex situation in which tactics of human shields and tactics of war and bombardments have left the civilian population in a very difficult and complex situation, which I was able to witness myself when went into Eastern Ghouta and spoke to a lot of people who have spent weeks in caves, in cellars of buildings, which were exposed to this very difficult situation of warring parties for too little concern for the needs of the civilian population," the ICRC president stated.
