According to my neighbors, Bwari market was razed as a result of the clash between Gbagi and Hausa youth which left at least four people dead. The violence was said to have started on Christmas Eve after a Hausa man reportedly killed a Gbagi man. In a bid for revenge, the Gbagis residing in the area burnt down the Bwari market on Christmas day.

I also live in Bwari, just blocks away from the market, but, travelled to Lagos on the 16th of December before the fight ensued. I couldn't hold back the tears as I saw what was left of the market. I sobbed uncontrollably as I went round the once bubbly market, hearing the woes of the traders and residents.

Some residents, neighbours and market men and women I had the opportunity to speak with, said they lost all their property and lives hard work. Most of them had just stocked their shops with goods for Christmas and New Year sales but all was brought to nought.

It was definitely a black Chrismas as there was no celebration for Bwari residents.

Although soldiers, policemen and naval officers have been patrolling the community since then but, the bitter aftermath still lingers. Traders and residents have to start from scratch. Most have already left the community.

Due to the clash, the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Minister, Musa Bello, imposed a 6pm-6am curfew on the troubled community, which is now 8pm-6am(dusk to dawn).
