Raus aus der Stadt! Es ist bereits die zweite Hitzewelle im Juli, die Europa überrollt. Während das Thermometer bei unseren Nachbarn auf über 40 Grad Celsius klettert, schwitzt Österreich bei vergleichsweise "moderaten" Tageshöchstwerten von bis zu 35 Grad. Die Hitze macht Mensch und Tier zu schaffen. Mit Sprühnebelduschen versucht die Stadt Wien aufgeheizte Plätze abzukühlen. Wer kann, flüchtet in ein Freibad oder sucht Abkühlung an einem Teich oder im Strandbad an der Donau. Eine kühle Erfrischung und tierischen Badespaß versprechen spezielle Hundebadeplätze.

It is already the second heat wave in July in Europe. While the thermometer at our neighbours climbs to over 40 degrees Celsius (104° F), Austria sweats at comparatively "moderate" daily highs of up to 35 degrees (95° F). The heat causes problems for humans and animals. The city of Vienna tries to cool hot places with spray showers. Those who can, flee to an outdoor pool or seek cooling at a pond or in one of the lidos at the Danube. A cool refreshment and animal bathing fun romise special dog bathing places.
Um der brütenden Großstadthitze zu entkommen, habe ich die letzten Tage in meiner Heimatstadt Lienz verbracht. Die rund 12.000 Einwohner zählende Bezirksstadt liegt in Osttirol, einem Naturparadies, das sich noch seine Ursprünglichkeit bewahrt hat. Auch Lienz blieb nicht von sengender Hitze verschont. Allerdings kühlt es in den Bergen in der Nacht ab, während in Wien ohne Klimaanlage schlaflose Tropennächte vorprogrammiert sind.
I spent the last days in my hometown Lienz to escape the brooding heat of the big city. The district town is located in East Tyrol and has around 12,000 inhabitants. East Tyrol is a natural paradise which has retained its original character. But also Lienz was not spared from scorching heat. However, in the mountains it cools down at night, while in Vienna sleepless tropical nights are inevitable without air conditioning.
Die bunten, mit Luft aufgeblasenen Tentakeln, die sich aus den Fenstern der Liebburg auf dem Hauptplatz rekeln, sind eine Installation der britischen Gruppe Design in Air. Sie sind Teil von OLALA, dem international renommierten Straßentheater-Festival, das seit vielen Jahren in der letzten Juli-Woche ausgewählte Plätze und Gassen der Stadt in eine Manege verwandelt.
The colorful tentacles, inflated with air, that stretch out of the windows of the Liebburg on the main square, are an installation of the British group Design in Air. It is part of OLALA, the internationally renowned street theatre festival, which for many years in the last week of July has been transforming selected squares and alleys of the city into a circus manege.
Ich bin keine Wasserratte, daher zieht es mich eher in die Berge als in überfüllte Schwimmbäder. Um nicht der stechenden Mittagssonne ausgesetzt zu sein, empfiehlt es sich, bei einer Wanderung möglichst früh aufzubrechen.
I'm not a water lover, so I'm more attracted to the mountains than to overcrowded swimming pools. In order not to be exposed to the stinging midday sun, it is advisable to start a hike as early as possible.
Im Wald ist es angenehm kühl, Alpenpflanzen und Kräuter säumen den Weg und nach einem kurzen, aber steilen Anstieg wird man mit einem Blick auf den Lienzer Talboden und das gewaltige Bergpanorama belohnt.
In the forest it is pleasantly cool, alpine plants and herbs line the way and after a short but steep ascent you are rewarded with a view of the valley floor of Lienz and the impressive mountain panorama.

Ein Spaziergang am schattigen Ufer entlang der Isel oder Drau, den beiden Flüssen, die durch Lienz fließen, darf bei keinem Heimatbesuch fehlen.
A stroll along the shady bank of the Isel or Drau, the two rivers that flow through Lienz, is a must on any of my homeland visit.
Inzwischen bin ich wieder in Wien. Rechtzeitig zum angekündigten Wetterumschwung, der gemäßigte Sommertemperaturen verspricht.
