Walk with me ... along the sea

My home is in Leisure Bay, a little piece of paradise on the East coast of South Africa in the southern part of KwaZulu-Natal, right on the border of the Eastern Cape.

From our driveway we can walk in either direction, south or north, and experience the awesomeness of one of these clean, unspoiled beaches.

There's Kidds Beach, Peter Pan Bay, Drakes Beach, and TO Strand. We've even had scenes from a movie shot on our favourite beach, Drakes Beach (Blue Crush 2- a surfing movie).

A bit further south is Splash Rock, a popular fishing spot with some spectacularly high splashes from the waves crashing onto the rocks. This is where I managed to get this short clip of humpback whales passing by!

The Indian Ocean is host to the sardine run, around June every year, when these little fish make their way up our coastline, followed by schools of dolphin, gamefish, humpback whales and thousands of seagulls, gannets, and other birds.

It is such a blessing to have all this literally in our back yard – lovely beaches and rocks, pathways along the seafront with unique flora and hardy dune plants, and the most amazing little animals who live in the bush and amongst the rocks, like the dassies (rock hyrax), blue and grey duiker (tiny buck weighing about 20kgs), vervet monkeys who love to sneak into the kitchen and steal food!

We have a whole family of tree dassies (tree hyrax) living in our garden, and most evenings we watch the group of about 8 running around in the treetops.

Below is the view from Drakes Beach across the bay to the lighthouse in Port Edward ... I am truly blessed.

All photos my own, except the tree hyrax - borrowed from a neighbour as ours are too skittish
