Characteristics

Their scientific name is Inia geoffrensis, they are a little different from their more common and well-known marine cousins, they have unique characteristics that allow them to live in fresh water, for example:

Its size can reach a maximum of 2.5 meters in length and has an average weight in males of 185 kg, while females can be a little larger and measure about 3 meters and weigh about 165 kg.

Their pink color appears in the adult stage because they are born gray like their marine relatives, the intense pink is accentuated more in the males.

Food and habitat

They are excellent hunters and their basic diet includes a surprising variety of 60 types of fish, in which we can find the crab, turtles. They feed alone and do not depend on the day or night to do so. They spend it on the bottoms of the rivers. Although when there are shoals of fish they are grouped in herds and one by one they take turns to eat.

Species and reproduction

For a long time it was thought that the pink dolphin was a single genus, but through studies, it was determined that it has subspecies and one of them is currently under study:

Inia geoffrensis: located in the large river basins of the Amazon.

Inia geoffrensis humboldtiana: located in the Orinoco river basin, in addition to the Meta and Apure rivers.

Inia boliviensis: still unconfirmed as a subspecies of the rolled dolphin inhabits the Madeira River in Bolivia.

How do they reproduce?

The pink dolphin reaches sexual maturity of six to seven years, regardless of subspecies. The act occurs when both sexes unite their wombs, they do it in the dry season, when water levels are much lower than normal, their gestation period lasts between 9 and 12 months, and the females give birth for the months of May and July which coincides with the rainy season where they will have plenty of food to feed their offspring.
