Importance of the application of agricultural lime in soils with acidic pH

It is evident that soils rich in nutritional elements should be preferred in relation to those that are very poor. The chemical analysis of the soil will tell us in what proportion are the essential indexes for plant nutrition, such as organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and micronutrients.

▶ It is also important to know the ph of the soil, i.e. the degree of acidity or alkalinity of the same, considering adequate values those between 5.5 and 6.5 within these levels are in maximum availability of the elements that the plant needs those below the minimum indicated can be corrected with the constant addition every year of organic matter and with the application of agricultural lime.

It is preferable to avoid soils with a steep slope and at the same time with little depth, because of the difficulties it poses during the long years of cultivation.

The best soils for citrus are those of medium to sandy texture (sandy loam to sandy loam), deep (60 to 120 cm), not very steep slopes, with a pH neither too low nor too high and a good availability of mineral elements and organic matter.

It is of fundamental importance to maintain the natural fertility of the soil that in most cases was lost with the long years of cultivation, productivity and crop success is directly related to the care given to the plants during the productive time.

That is, in crops that were not cared for a long time become unproductive due to the constant increase of pests and diseases and the loss of fertility due to the extraction of minerals by the fruits harvested during the cultivation periods.
