Books For The Sportsman - Bugling for Elk

Bugling for Elk: A Complete Guide To Early-Season Elk Hunting by Dwight Schuh, Stoneydale Press Publishing Company, Stevensville, Montana, 1983, 162 pages. In Hardcover and Softcover Editions.

Every once and awhile a book comes along that makes bowhunters everywhere stand up and take notice, and Dwight Schuh's "Bugling For Elk" did just that, in 1983. You might say that it bugled in a steady stream of wild-eyed elk hunters too, eager to discover just exactly what this elk calling thing was all about.

It's hard to believe that it's been 35 years or so when I took a look at my first copy, and I remember pouring over it several times before I had even begun to get my fill. It arrived at a time when the idea of bowhunting for elk was really taking off, and it provided some much needed guidance for what seemed a most puzzling and impossible pursuit.

One thing was obvious though. Somehow this slim, magical little volume held the keys to the kingdom, and I, like many, were determined to find it. Speaking for myself, it most certainly did.

Suddenly, success was possible. It really changed the calling game too. Mass produced elk bugles were just coming into vogue, though not always readily available, and even fewer hunters knew how to use them effectively.

Today, the amount of easily accessible hunting knowledge is everywhere, and a multitude of calls and helpful gear are but a few quick keystrokes away. For better, or worse, it now seems that the almost mystical elk hunting world of the past exists only in a land most far, far away.

Dwight Schuh remains a giant in the bowhunting community. Author of nine books, a freelance writer and photographer for almost three decades, editor of Sports Afield, Outdoor Life, and Bowhunter Magazines'. Dwight's done it all in the elk hunting universe, and it shows on every page of his writings.

Past or present, "Bugling for Elk" will remain an iconic work on the subject for decades to come, and deserves a place on every big game hunter's bookshelf.
