“Who Do You Love” (2017 – original from 1956)

In contrast to the numerous rock’n’roll versions of this song, this rendition harkens back to its origins in rhythm’n’blues (R&B) – or even in the blues.

Pre R’n’R Perfection

This version features a slow, steamy stew of bluesy guitar and piano, along with a sultry delivery by Elise. Inevitably, those elements blend together seamlessly and perfectly, resulting in the bluest version since … well, since before Bo Diddley helped invent rock’n’roll.

Released in 2016, this track reached the “Top 10”  on the CBC Radio 2 chart.

(To be clear, the original R&B genre of music is not the same as  “contemporary R&B,”  which is essentially pop music, and much of which pales in comparison to the original R&B. The original R&B not only “sounds”  different, it “is”  different.)   (Image source)

A Good Woman

In 2012, her debut single “No Good Woman”  spent 3 months in the “Top 10”  of the Nielsen BDS Adult Contemporary chart.

In February 2018, Elise released her cleverly titled debut album, “Playing Chess.”  It comprises her covers of various classic songs from the catalogue of Chess Records, the great Chicago-based blues label.            (Image source)

I walk 47 miles of barbed wire

I use a cobra-snake for a necktie

I got a brand new house on the roadside

Made from rattlesnake hide

I got a brand new chimney made on top

Made out of a human skull

Now come on take a walk with me, Arlene

And tell me, who do you love?

Who do you love?    [4x]

Tombstone hand and a graveyard mine

Just 22 and I don't mind dying

Who do you love?    [4x]

I rode around the town, use a rattlesnake whip

Take it easy, Arlene, don't give me no lip

Who do you love?    [4x]

Night was dark, but the sky was blue

Down the alley, the ice-wagon flew

Heard a bump, and somebody screamed

You should have heard just what I seen

Who do you love?    [4x]

Arlene took me by my hand

And she said, oh bo, you know I understand

Who do you love?    [4x]
