Elvis appeared to him in a dream, telling him that he’d create the finest version of this song.

“Suspicious Minds” (1985 – original from 1968)

The fine British band Fine Young Cannibals recorded this cover of “Suspicious Minds” for their 1985 debut album. It became an international Top-40 hit.

At His Majesty’s Dreamy Service

According to the FYC singer Roland Gift, he had seen Elvis Presley in a dream. The king of rock’n’roll informed Gift that he would create the finest-ever cover version of “Suspicious Minds.”

The band went on to create this superb version. The powerful vocals, the soulful back-up vocals by Jimmy Somervile, the crisp rock music, and the subtle horns combine to make this cover a masterpiece.

The video starts out black and white, but midway through, flashes of color and glitter appear. As the band continues moving and grooving, shimmying and shaking, it seems as if maybe the king is present. Or just maybe … Elvis is everywhere.   (Image source)

Fine Young Cannibals

The band Fine Young Cannibals was formed by 2 former members of the British post-punk ska band The Beat (aka The English Beat or The British Beat), after The Beat split up.

In 1985, Fine Young Cannibals’ debut album charted in the UK, Australia, Canada, and several European countries. After a few years, the US also took notice.

We're caught in a trap

I can't walk out

Because I love you too much baby

Why can't you see

What you're doing to me

When you don't believe a word I say?

We can't go on together

With suspicious minds

And we can't build our dreams

On suspicious minds

So, if an old friend I know

Drops by to say hello

Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?

Here we go again
Asking where I've been
You can't see these tears are real
I'm crying

We can't go on together
With suspicious minds
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds

Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Let's don't let a good thing die

When honey, you know
I've never lied to you
Mmm yeah, yeah   (Image source)
