An "institution" is coming to an end, and it's really going to bum out that one kid on your bus with the NOFX patches on his Jansport.
In a statement that was more a long-winded rambling misunderstanding and misclassification of the basic genres of music, rather than a useful piece of informative press release, founder of the Vans Warped Tour, Kevin Lyman, has announced the 24-year-old Vans Warped Tour will not be returning for another national tour after 2018.
Cited were flagging ticket sales and band attendance, which I think becomes rather self-evident when one takes a look at the 2018 lineup and does a "have I heard of this band" check and a "is this band only a special guest for two dates" check.
Honestly, aside from some long-time exceptions who have been with the tour forever like Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake, this is a highly disappointing and borderline musically irrelevant and obsolete lineup. I'm inclined to take them at their word regarding lagging ticket sales and band participation.
In case you can't tell, this wasn't a show I ever was inclined to buy tickets for. In general, I don't like giant festivals like this. When you have 50+ bands, each is playing 2-5 songs, if that, and boy are they bored by the end of the tour's run. You're also dealing with multiple stage and simultaneous performances, no seating, and the general haphazard nature of open lawn festivals.
Plus, they just go on...and on. And on.
Regardless of my personal feelings on the concert, it was certainly an institution and launched a great many bands, some of which didn't even completely suck. It's a bit of 90's nostalgia gone to see it go.
On the plus side, perhaps this will lead to Less Than Jake charging a more reasonable fee next time they are in my neck of the woods.
Honestly, you'd think a "punk" tour would be busy hiding the Katy Perry connection...
