Iggy Pop - Some Weird Sin
I went on a bit of an Iggy binge
today while working, starting with some Stooges and into his early solo discography. Iggy started in The Stooges in 1967, continuing with the group on and off over the following decades (they've broken up and reunited quite a bit). However, in the mid/late '70s, Pop decided to embark on a solo career, releasing The Idiot in 1977. Pop and David Bowie had become friends, and both of them wanted to quite their drug habits, so they moved to France together, and Bowie helped produce (and write) the album. It's a great debut album, with all sorts of weird electronic and synthesized sounds that make it really unique for the time period. Pop's sophomore album, 1977's Lust for Life, was also produced by Bowie, though this time in Berlin, after Iggy had toured for the previous release. Pop wanted more compositional control on this album (as the previous release was very much a Bowie creation) and created a much more rock and roll oriented record. However, it is weird in it's own way; for a long time, I had sort of ignored this album, assuming it was similar to the single 'The Passenger' (which I love), but once I gave it a chance, I realized it was much more 'out-there'. This song is a great example of that. The rock and roll elements are obvious, but the production, timbres used, and even the variations on the 12 bar blues pattern make it something that really stands apart from the other '50s influenced rock of the time.
