"Spider-Man: No Way" Shatters Box Office Records

Yes, we knew Spider-Man: No Way Home was going to be super big, but no one imagined that any movie can be this big during the pandemic.

Our first clue was when the online tickets sales websites started crushing because of high demand. But a lot of times Fandango reported excellent ticket sales and the box office numbers are just not impressive.

Then the hype got super real when a trailer leaked online. The internet exploded and Sony released an official trailer for the movie. We got a few variations on it, but we got one trailer. Two posters. Character posters only for the actors in the trailer. Interviews only with the actors on the trailer. Even though the internet was flooded with spoilers, there was an advertisement campaign calling not to spoiler the movie. Yes, just like with Avengers: Endgame. In both cases that just built more hype for the movie.

Estimates were rather conservative going in to opening weekend. A global opening of around 290 million dollars. They had no idea what they were talking about. Movie theaters had to put more and more screenings per day because of audience demanded. It wasn't 24/7 like Endgame, but it was big. Great reviews from both critics and audiences helped the hype and the box office exploded like COVID isn't here and like we are not heading into another wave of restrictions.

Spider-Man: No Way Home opened with 260 million dollars in the U.S. alone. When no movie managed to open with a 100 million dollars since the beginning of the pandemic, Spider-Man: No Way Home crushed that landmark and left it far behind. In just its opening weekend it became the highest grossing movie of 2021 in the U.S.

260 million dollars is also a tie with Avengers: Infinity War for the second biggest opening ever in the U.S. Yes, Spider-Man is making Avengers level money.

Globally the movie opened with 600 million dollars. An amount that most movies these days can't even dream about reaching. Spider-Man is the second fastest movie to reach this box office milestone without China as the movie is not playing there and there is a good chance that it won't play there.

Now the movie is in its second weekend and the records keep breaking. It is the first movie of the pandemic that has joined the billion dollars club. That also makes it the highest grossing movie of the year globally. It is also the second fastest movie to reach a billion dollars and is again tied with Avengers: Infinity War. They both made a billion dollars in 11 days. No one can beat Avengers: End Game, not in the near future anyway.

It has also climbed to number 37 in the highest grossing movies of all times chart. A chart that no one has mentioned in about two years. It will probably continue to climb that chart to a more impressive spot.

For now the movie is tied with Avengers: Infinity War and yes before COVID it was so obvious that Spider-Man: No Way Home will make two billion dollars at the box office. Now it is super impressive that it made one. With Omicron causing extensive lockdowns worldwide and no China release date I don't see Spider-Man: No Way Home making it to two billion dollars. But maybe the hype and fans love will push the movie pass that line. That would be an amazing win.

But still, even now this movie is an amazing win for Sony, movies in general and movie theaters. It shows that people will show up to see a movie in theaters for the right movie. There is hope for moviegoing yet. For now, this movie is an absolute win in every possible way.
