"Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" the Highest Grossing Movie at the U.S. in 2021

Right before Eternals comes out it is time to look back at what Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has managed to achieve and it is a lot. The movie has the third biggest box office opening weekend of the year as the movie opened with 75 million dollars at the U.S. box office. Only Black Widow and Venom: Let There Be Carnage opened higher and they enjoy a much bigger name recognition.

It's not just the opening weekend. It enjoyed strong week to week hold. After nine weeks it is the first time that the movie is out of the top 10 at the box office. That's impressive legs during COVID times. The movie made 222 million dollars at the U.S. box office alone and that is enough to make the highest grossing movie in the U.S. all together. So fat, it is also the only movie that managed to break the 200 million dollars barrier at the U.S. box office, although Venom 2 is getting close to the 200 million dollars mark as well.

Globally the movie made 423 million dollars total at the box office. This amazing number doesn't include China as the country not officially banned the movie there as the lead actor Simu Liu made some unpleasant remarks about the movie. A problem that Eternals will also face as Chloé Zhao has also made a few unpleasant comments about the country. Still, breaking the 400 million dollars barrier at the global box office is something that some movies that are super big can only dream of. It is now officially the 7th highest grossing movie of the year, which is amazing. And the 4th biggest movie of the year unofficially which is even better.

Sure, it is not even close to the billion dollar club and yes the movie probably had a 200 million dollars budget. But this is COVID times and we need to put everything through that perspective. Through this perspective it is a hit. It came out in the middle of a COVID surge and still made big bucks at the box office, it is not that simple or easy.

I really hope that Marvel will ignore the lack of Chinese release date and that the movie will get a sequel and that Shang-Chi will appear in many other Marvel movies. The movie and the character deserve it.
