It Chapter 2 – Spoiler Free Movie Review

IT chapter 2.jpg

Most critics were right, this is not as good as the first movie, but it is still a decent horror movie.

As you know this movie takes place 20 years after the previous movie. Jessica Chastain is now the older Beverly Marsh (Sophia Lillis is the younger version), James McAvoy is now the older
Bill Denbrough (Jaeden Martell is the younger version), Bill Hader is now the older Richie Tozier (Finn Wolfhard is the younger version), Isaiah Mustafa is now the older Mike Hanlon (Chosen Jacobs is the younger version), Jay Ryan is now the older Ben Hanscom (Jeremy Ray Taylor is the younger version), James Ransone is now the older Eddie Kaspbrak (Jack Dylan Grazer is the younger version) and Andy Bean is now the older Stanley Uris (Wyatt Oleff is the younger version). Bill Skarsgård reprised his role excellently as the creepy Pennywise the dancing clown. Yes these are a lot of actors.

In the end of the previous movie the losers club made an oath to fight the monster if it will return again. Now Pennywise is back and the losers will try and defeat it once and for all. Mike stayed in Derry and notices that It has returned so he called in the others. They are not happy to be back that is to say the least, but there is no escaping Pennywise. The story shows their struggle with It now as well as their struggle against It in the past, which is mostly scenes that we have not seen. Still with so many characters, there is just not enough screen time for everyone.

And this movie is much longer than the previous one and it felt like it. I found myself at times wondering when the movie will pick up the pace or when will it be over. There are things the movie should have delved more deeply into and things that it could have cut without a problem.

Still the movie was mostly entertaining. As a horror movie, this movie leaned on jumps scares a lot more than the previous one. There was a lot of horrory stuff going on and it was mostly fun, not the keep you up at night sort of scary in my opinion. As you all probably heard Bill Hader is the MVP of the movie. Probably because he was given the most interesting character, not that his character actually develops in the movie. In fact no character develops in the movie. Still, his acting is phenomenal. We already know that James McAvoy is a great actor so no surprise there. But his characters was just not that interesting here. It is the horror stuff that keeps you engaged.

It really did bug me that we get introduced to the new lives the characters run, their struggles, and yet they go through zero changes. It is just not good writing.

It was a fun movie in the end. Defiantly not scary, but I didn't find the previous installment to be scary either. It is also not a must see in theaters, you can wait to stream it and pause when the need to take a break will arise. However, there are some things that will stick with you in the end so it is not a waste of time. In my opinion the movie, again, manages to show that sometimes the worst monsters are actually just regular humans.
