Avatar: The Way of Water – Spoiler Free Review

I know I am late to this party, but I have been super busy and didn't have time to go to the movies. Plus, I needed to find a 3D screening because there is no other worth watching this movie. Yes, until this day James Cameron is the only director that knows how to use 3D in an effective way. 3D is really the only way to watch this movie. I don't think even an IMAX will do it, it has to be 3D.

This movie is just gorgeous. It is a cinematic wonder to your eyes. It actually uses 3D in a different way than the first movie did. There aren't a lot of things jumping at you in a 3D way, as much as everything just looks amazing. Every shoot is beautiful and has unbelievable depth to it. Every color looks brilliant. The quality of the image is amazing. The colors are sharp and defined. The way everything moves is amazing. The way water looks makes you want to book a trip to the Maldives and I'm not sure that even the water there are this beautiful with such amazing colors. The new people of Pandora that we get to meet also look different and have a unique design. The new animals we get to meet look stunning and unique. Basically this movie gets an A++ on visual design. It is mind bogglingly beautiful.

Obviously, just like the first movie, the script isn't great. Although at this point people come to this movie for Pandora, not the plot. The movie follows Jake Sully and his wife Neytiri who now have four children, plus a half adopted human child which they call Spider. They all live sort of happy lives together, you know, kids will be kids. And military dads will be military dads. Then one day the sky people, I mean, the humans return and they are after Sully. In order to protect his family and avoid putting them in harm's way, instead of fighting Sully decides to run away to the sea clans and tries to learn the way of water to blend in with them. You know, the totally obvious way of action. There are a lot of things in this movie that contradict the first movie, so it's actually better if you don't remember the first one properly. But you know, no one comes to see this movie for the plot, they come for the visuals.

But we also get a bonus part of getting to know great new character. James Cameron is all about the feels. Getting to know the water people, their ways, their beautiful creatures, everything about them is just wonderful. Unfortunately, it takes a while before the movie goes there so be patient. The movie also takes a step back from Jake and Neytiri and focuses on their children instead. Which is understandable. I do like them. Plus, the emotional connection that we make with them is worthwhile. Regrettably, Jake and Neytiri seem to have new personalities in this movie. I mean no personalities. Maybe it is because they are parents now, but they feel totally different in this movie which is odd to say the least. Still, with all of the new characters added it is easy to ignore.

Obviously this movie is a must see experience and must see in 3D. It is more of an experience than an actual movie, but it is an experience you will enjoy. It's hard to find movies that you can say that are gorgeous and visually engaging from start to finish. Yes, James Cameron has done it again.
