I think decent is one of the scariest horror movies in recent years. It does so many things right that other horror movies fail to do. It’s about a a woman after a tragic accident involving the death of her daughter who goes spelunking with a group of other women. Several things go wrong when she is down there, and they end up getting trapped with vicious cave-dwellers. I’d like to start off with the setting. It’s perfect for a horror movie. When I watched, I could really feel the isolation, and it was an unfamiliar and dangerous environment for the characters, which makes it all the more scary. The cast is pretty much all women, and they do a great job. Shauna MacDonald goes from a tragic character to a complete badass. She is an awesome lead character. The creatures were super awesome. They are definitely reminiscent of Nosferatu-like vampires, but still have a unique look to them. They are super scary and some of my favorite horror villains. The gore is super great, too. Finally, the twist. The original twist is super dark. It’s kind of a dream sequence, but it’s done correctly. Just as you feel like Sarah is safe, BOOM! She’s still in the cave. In the other ending, she actually gets out, but I prefer the darker ending. Overall, I love The Descent, and give it a 9/10.
