Motherland:
Once upon a time in an imaginary world, two nations decided to announce something special on Mother’s day to encourage motherhood at the workplace. Nation A decided that companies should offer 6 months paid maternity leave at their own cost. Nation B decided to compensate for 6 months maternity directly to women from tax collected.
BPO and other small manufacturing businesses from Nation A, which were operating on tight margins started to charge more to their global clients for the new increased cost. Global clients started to move their business to Nation B as they had lower cost and Nation A started losing jobs.
Businessmen from Nation A had an existential crisis and to survive stopped hiring young women to keep costs down. Per capita incomes of Nation A stopped growing with one gender contributing and Nation B prospered due to trickle down capitalism.
World over mothers are thankful that it’s only happening in an imaginary world and there’s nothing real about it.
