It is tax season in the United States and historically, governments would do whatever it takes to collect an extra couple of dollars from each and every one of us. I have found a couple taxes, both current and in the past too funny not to share.

In this world, nothing can be certain, except death and taxes.

1. THE WINDOW TAX

The tax was introduced in the 1696 England, and the property tax is calculated based on the number of windows each house has. It makes it a lot easier for tax collectors to calculate how much each property owner owes in property taxes. The idea behind is that the riches tend to have a large house with more numbers of windows. Of course, people weren’t stupid; they started to increase the size of each window, building houses with fewer windows, or even eliminate windows after all.

2. THE BEARD TAX

After Tsar Peter I traveled aboard, he really wanted to modernize and westernize the whole Russian culture. He cleaned his own facial hair and expecting the others do the same, however, the trend did not take off as he planned originally. Therefore, he introduced a “beard tax” in 1698 for whoever had not shave the beards. The tax ranged from 100 rubles to around 1 kopek, and it is estimated to cost around $1,500 USD annually in today’s dollar. @tydebbie would definitely love this tax if it is being introduced today.

3. THE WALLPAPER TAX

The tax was introduced in the 1712 England and the tax was originally taxed at 1 pence per square yard. Next thing you know, people started avoiding the tax by hanging plain wallpaper and then paint it later. Such tax was removed in 1836.

7. THE CRACK TAX

If you are a drug dealer in Tennessee, you are subjected to taxes on the sale of illegal substances. $3.50 per gram of marijuana, $50 per gram for cocaine, and $200 for meth and crack cocaine. Dealers needed to pay the taxes anonymously at the state revenue office. This tax was introduced in 2005 and ended in 2009.
