Explaining how Major League Baseball works

In a Major League Baseball game, there are two opposing teams: offence and defence. It's crucial to know the positions of each side's players in order to comprehend the game. The players’ positions and their duties throughout the game are described briefly below.

Offensive players

The team batting in the game is called the offense. There are two positions in the offense: the hitter and the baserunner. At a time, there is one hitter and three baserunners on the field.

The Hitter/ the Batter

A player from the offensive side who stands in the batter’s box and attempts to hit the ball with his bat. A hitter scores a run if he hits the ball and makes it to the base safely. A hitter is out if he or she receives three strikes or smacks the ball into the air and a fielder catches it.

Baserunner

A player from the offensive side who stands on or near first, second, or third base, when a pitcher throws a pitch is called a baserunner. The baserunner can sprint to the next base as the pitcher throws the pitch and the batter smashes the ball. A baserunner's primary goal is to score runs.

Defensive players

The defence refers to the players who are positioned in the infield and outfield during the game. The defense's major goal is to keep the offensive team from getting hits and scoring runs. Few common defensive positions are given below.

Pitcher – Pitching

Refers to a defensive player who stands on the pitcher mound and throws the ball to the batter. A pitcher throws the ball in such a way that the batter either misses it and it lands in the strike zone, or the batter makes weak contact and gets out.

Catcher

The catcher stands in the catcher’s box behind the home plate. The main objective of the catcher is to receive all the balls thrown by the pitcher. A catcher must be fast in order to keep an eye on a baserunner who tries to steal a base. We have sourced a lot of our MLB data from the BParlay.com MLB Parlay Picks website and and fact sheets.

Baseman

There are three basemen on the defensive side who are responsible for fielding the area around their respective base. They are responsible for catching the ball, whether it was hit by the batter or thrown by a defensive player.

Shortstop

The shortstop is a player who plays between the second and third base areas. It's one of the most demanding defensive fielding positions. The shortstop is in charge of catching the ball and tossing it to the baseman to put the base runner out.
