There is a current obsession in mainstream media and academic discourse pertaining to Islam and the West. This current obsession is tinged with negative signifiers with the global media’s predominantly negative portrayal of Islam and Muslims, depicting Muslims generally as violent, fanatical, bigoted, or as extremists and terrorists. The media has played a huge role in creating this public hatred and fear towards Muslim extremists and the people of the religion in general, depicting them as violent and radical.
After 9/11.Muslims has been portrayed as terrorist. Their identity went into suspension. We also see the suspect identity of Changez in the novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist.
