Hope... why do we hope?

Hope... why do we hope
For that which is not
For that which may never be

Hope is the opiate of the mind
It numbs the pain
And allows us to go on

Hope is but a wakened dream
Hope is but a waiting dream
A dream of something to come
A memory of something past
Longing to be restored

Why do we hope in vain
For that which may not ever be
Why do we torment ourselves
With romantic notions of a better life

Is hope for the foolish
Is it only for the ignorant of mind
Yet amidst all life's wisdom and intellect
How does one keep from indulging in a little hope

I hope for a better day
A morning when I can wake to see your beauty
An afternoon when I can walk beside you
An evening when I can embrace your glorious light
And a night where I drift off to sleep
With only the sound of you breathing
