Things That Void Your Watch's Warranty - Oh No!

Most of the new watches that you buy nowadays come with an original manufacturer's warranty.

Lately, some of the big watch companies like Rolex, are offering ridiculously long warranties to attract new customers; for example, like 10 years long!

I say “ridiculous,” because it's actually overkill. It is highly likely that the stuff the warranty does cover will never happen to your watch.

The reality is that a manufacturer's warranty only covers manufacturing defects; e.g., if they didn't lubricate the watch movement correctly and it dried up prematurely, causing the watch to keep time inaccurately during the first year.

I have seen this with a couple of AP that we have sent in to Audemars Piget for service. When it comes back from the manufacturer, the report shows “Premature Expiration of Lubrication.” Ouch! Sounds painful!

Normally, the things that people worry about are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty; things such as physical damage. Yup, if you run it over with your Ferrari, you're out of luck!

Keep in mind though that when you send a watch in to the factory for repair, it can take months to get that watch back! That's not necessary a bad thing and I do recommend it for some complicated watches and chronographs.

But for a regular watch, like a Rolex, I don't even care about the warranty and would instead take it a to a highly skilled watchmaker locally for repairs (unless you're dealing with a super complicated problem).

Here are some of the things that can void your watch's warranty:

  1. Opening the case – Trust me, they'll know.

  2. Any repairs done to the watch – Trust me, they'll know.

  3. Alterations to the watch (things like swapping dials, or making any other alterations) – The only alternations that I would have done on a watch that's within the original warranty term is changing a bezel or strap, because these things are superficial and reversible.
