Light painting photography is a form of art that uses lights and can be achieve with the camera’s shutter open for a seconds to extend the exposure time. It’s just easy but you need to learn how to play with it in order to produce a beautiful one.

This is just my first time doing this but let me share you how I did it.

Things Needed:

1. Camera
Any camera with a long shutter speed will do, but I highly recommend you to use DSLR camera if you have one. With this you may choose your desired shutter seconds and play along with the camera settings. In my case, I used Nikon D5000. However you may use any camera you prefer.

2. External Flash
Well actually, this is not a must. I just used it to be able to illuminate the subject and made it visible. Flashlight may be use as an alternative but it will be more difficult to manipulate. Because, you just have to light it up for a split of second. But if you just want to draw, no need for this.

3. Colorful Lights
In my photos I used this kind of thing. (refer above) They are available in any toy store and it will not cost you that much. If you can find colored flashlights it’s fine. These will be your paints during the photoshoot. If you want an alternative, you may just stick with the normal flashlights and just cover it with different colors of cellophane.

4. Tripod
Honestly, I was not able to use one during this shoot however, I realized its importance after. It will make your camera more stabilize and it will prevent your photo having a blurry image.

5. Someone to Draw
It’s your time to show the artist in you. Be creative! Draw whatever you want and make sure you move fast! :)

In the photo above you can see that I was not able to make out of the scene for the set time, so I ruined the shot, haha! That’s why moving faster is very important.

STEPS

  1. Make sure that you turn off all the lights, the darker the place the brighter your drawing will be.
  2. Adjust the camera to your desired settings. Make the shutter speed to 5 seconds and above.
  3. Capture to start the count.
  4. Draw in the air with your colorful lights. Make sure you do it fast.
  5. When your done in drawing your design. Turn on your external flash or flashlight for 0.5 - 1 second is only. Find the best position for good lighting.
  6. Shutter done
  7. Be creative! Enjoy and have fun!

I am not a professional photographer and this guide is just based on my experience. This is just a basic way to produce a photo from a long exposure shutter speed. I hope this will be helpful. Go try it and have fun!
