John D. Rockefeller On Work

Do you know anyone who is zealous in his work? He is the equal of kings.”

- John D. Rockefeller (1839 - 1937)

This is a wonderful quote from one of history's great business titans (or robber barons, depending on your point of view). I think the gist of what he's saying here is that to be highly productive requires great integrity. In the realm of productivity, I think integrity consists of having emotional control.

It's about doing what you need to do, when it needs to be done, whether you feel like it or not. How many of us can claim to have this kind of unshakeable self-control? Not me, that's for sure!

It's so tempting to take the easy route, to slack off, to travel the path of 'good enough'. I'm as guilty of this as the next person. The good news is, self-control, like any other virtue, can be developed. The trick is to start small and take it a day at a time. Small disciplines can become big disciplines with time and practise.

Consider Stephen Guise's approach of mini habits – take an area of your life you'd like to improve and create a mini habit around it. This is a great way to cultivate the right mindset.

Before long, you'll see results, which will spur you on to create even bigger results. In time you can transform your levels of productivity, which will transform your life.
