Bengkulu Natural Resource Conservation Agency (BKSDA) officer found a leatherback turtle species (Dermochelys coriaceae) landed and laying on the coast of the conservation area of Air Hitam Nature Park (TWA), Mukomuko Regency, Bengkulu Province.
"This is the first landing after ten years ago we found this kind of starfruit landed on TWA Air Hitam," said officer BKSDA Bengkulu Rasyidin Prima when contacted from Bengkulu, Monday (22/1/2018).
He said all types of turtles in Indonesian waters are protected species. However, of a number of species, leatherback turtles are the rarest species.
According to Rashidin, the turtle landing was first witnessed by the residents. Even some eggs have been secured by local residents.
Knowing the existence of the turtle's information, the officers went to the residents and secured as many as 80 eggs. "Eggs that have been secured we will be hardened until the child turtle and then released into the habitat," he said.
The leatherback is a kind of giant turtle and the only one of the living Dermochelyidae. This species can be easily identified from its carapaks, which are shaped like stripes on star fruit.
