Earth Overshoot Day: it's time to act

Today it’s the Earth Overshoot Day. Sustainable living is the only answer to our big problems. If you don’t care about, stop reading my article. If you are interested, what you can do for sustainable living, I give you some ideas. You can even save money with some issues.

Aspects you can save money with:

  • Give of clothes and other things, you need only a selection of your things. You can save a lot of money in the long run. If you are looking for a new apartment or a new person is living in your apartment (maybe a baby) you need less living space.
  • Use our bicycle, public transport and car-sharing instead of owning a car (if you need a car, buy an electric one).
  • Try to find nice holiday destinations in your own country instead of using a plane to another continent.

Aspects without saving money:

  • Order green electricity (in Germany the price is almost the same, it’s maybe 2 or 3% more expensive)
  • Try to eat less meat, cheese and butter, particularly from cows and pigs. You can prefer chicken, if you want to eat meat.
  • Avoid waste, for example use cotton napkins for your baby.

Aspects you have to spend more money:

  • Eat ecological food and wear ecological clothes.
  • Buy things with a seal like fairtrade or explicitly sustainable products like the Fairphone.
  • Try to live in an apartment with a good thermal insulation. Bad thermal insulation is underestimated: more than 70% of the energy in a private household is used for heating.

Maybe you are motivated now to change something in your life. It’s a good feeling and you will find other people, who share this way of life with you.
