HAPPY KAAMATAN @ HARVEST FESTIVAL!

Hello to all steemians.

Government election already passed! Now it's time to switch to Kaamatan mood. This month of May, especially for Sabahan is our time to celebrating the Harvest Festival.

May, 30th & 31st is a public holiday to the State of Sabah. Many locals and tourists will gather at Dewan Hongkod, KDCA every year at Penampang on 30th & 31st of May to State-Level celebration.

There are so many activities such as Sugandoi & Unduk Ngadau. Sugandoi is a singing competition. Unduk Ngadau is a beauty pageant. Please refer to the picture above to see the beautiful Unduk Ngadau crowned on 2016. Every contestant is expected to wear a traditional costume to represent their ethnicity. However, some contestants may choose to wear a costume from any particular district. (will write more about this in my next post).

WHY SABAHAN CELEBRATE PESTA KAAMATAN OR HARVEST FESTIVAL

This festival is related to rice cultivation as rice is the main crop in Sabah. Pesta Kaamatan marks the end of the planting cycle. (My parents just start sowing the seeds)

Farmers and families take this opportunity to give thanks to the spirits and gods for providing them with a fruitful reap and pray that the gods will bless them with bountiful harvest the following year.

In short, Pesta Kaamatan is a localized thanksgiving celebration.

See you guys in my next post
