Mr. Mahathir Mohammad was a former prime minister, at the head of the BN coalition, for 22 years, from 1981 until he resigned in 2003.
Under his authority, Malaysia ended up one of the Asian tigers - the gathering of nations which saw their economies grow quickly in the 1990s.
