What is True Education?

It is not your blue blood, your pedigree, or your college degree. It’s what you do with your life that counts. – Millard Fuller

Maybe some of you might agree while others won’t. Having a college degree is great. Most of us spend a lot of time studying just to get that ‘diploma’ we dream of. Many of your friends must have said that getting a “world-class higher education” is a prerequisite to having a well-paid job. However, it is not everything. Life is more than having a car with a six-figure price tag and a cozy mansion. Surely, “life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.” (Luke 12:24, NIV). So, if that’s not the case, what is true education, then?

“True education means more than the pursual of a certain course of study. It means more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers.” {Education, 13.1}

In other words, true education is more than those mind-boggling mathematical problems, comprehensive laboratory activities, and tons of literary books. True education values true wisdom which can only be found in GOD. It is holistic and elevates the soul to heavenly themes. True education is neither just a scientific nor an academic experience, it is a sacred experience between the student and the LORD who is “the beginning of knowledge” and “wisdom” (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10, KJV).

As students bearing the name of Jesus, with a sincere heart, we must strive for excellence neither for the purpose of acquiring worldly riches nor for human recognition but solely for the glory of God. As students in schools, colleges and universities, we should ever remember the essence and beauty of true education as stated in this quotation:

“Whatever line of investigation we pursue, with a sincere purpose to arrive at truth, we are brought in touch with the unseen, mighty Intelligence that is working in and through all. The mind of man is brought into communion with the mind of God, the finite with the Infinite. The effect of such communion on body and mind and soul is beyond estimate.” {Ed 14.2}
