I started this blog to push myself by planning my days and finding the time to do something I love and makes me feel great, which is deep thinking and writing. However, a couple of months after my first posts I got a big promotion that changed everything. Suddenly, my life was filled with certifications, courses, tons of new information, some trips and multiple opportunities to test myself, mentally and physically. All these things contribute to my ultimate goal, which is to add value to my life every day.
A principios de año abrí este blog para motivarme a planear mejor mis días y encontrar tiempo para cosas que me encantan y me hacen sentir genial, como escribir o filosofar sobre la vida. Sin embargo, a mediados de Junio recibí una propuesta para aplicar a una promoción y mis días se fueron llenando de estudios, pruebas, entrevistas hasta obtener el trabajo. Luego llegaron más estudios, cursos, mucha información nueva, un par de viajes y muchos retos psicológicos y físicos. Todas estas cosas contribuyen a mi meta, la cual es agregar valor a mi vida todos los días.
Today I want to briefly talk about my experience during these three months as a leader of a group of fifteen people and one of the most complex departments in the company, as well as my thoughts from an energetic standpoint. If I had to summarize these three months in a sentence I would say: “A leader needs to integrate the right balance of masculine and feminine energy to be competent, ambitious, powerful and formidable while cultivating his empathy, self-awareness and kindness.”
Hoy hablaré brevemente sobre mi experiencia en estos tres meses desde que tomé formalmente el reto de ser el líder de un grupo de quince personas en uno de los departamentos más complicados de la compañía. Así como también compartir mis pensamientos desde el punto de vista energético. Si tuviera que resumir estos meses en una oración diría: “Un líder debe integrar el balance correcto entre energía masculina y femenina para ser competente, ambicioso, poderoso y formidable mientras a la vez cultiva su empatía, amabilidad y auto conocimiento”
Masculine energy should take driver’s seat when it comes to leading a team, a leader has to be purpose driven, goal oriented, assertive and self-assured. A leader should have an unbreakable sense of confidence because he will be tested multiple times in multiple ways and he will be the man all the team members will go when looking for answers in the middle of a challenge, he needs to remain cold headed and exude confidence on his own judgement and his problem-solving skills.
La energía masculina debe tomar el volante cuando se trata de liderar a un equipo, un líder debe tener un propósito claro, metas bien definidas, debe ser asertivo y estar bien plantado. Un líder debe tener una confianza inquebrantable porque será expuesto a pruebas múltiples veces y el será el referente al cual todos los miembros del equipo acudirán cuando necesiten encontrar respuestas o soluciones a problemas. Un líder necesita mantener la cabeza fría e irradiar confianza su criterio y sus habilidades para resolver cualquier problema que surja.
Tests will come in all ways, shapes, or forms. They will come in form of complains after a seemingly small decision you made, in form of negative comments from peers after noticing how successful you are, they will come in form of negative energy from former peers: “I would have never taken this promotion, it is too much responsibility, if anything goes wrong you are responsible, you are the department’s face and everything is over your shoulders” and RIGHT THERE is where you should be able to hold your ground and withstand any test that comes your way. RIGHT THERE is where your unbreakable confidence takes play, you need to be strong and know that no matter what you will be okay, because you were born to take the heat, because you have been taking the heat your entire life and if there’s someone able to take a project over his shoulders and move forward IS YOU! You know the effects of the heat on yourself, and you are a MAN who looks forward to being pushed deeper and deeper into the oven and use that temperature to forge your strength, values, your qualities, your confidence and above all things your self-respect.
En este camino encontrarás múltiples pruebas. Estas vendrán en forma de quejas ante una aparentemente pequeña decisión que tomaste, en forma de comentarios negativos por parte de tus pares después de notar que lo estás haciendo exitosamente, o en forma de energía negativa por parte de ex pares: “Yo nunca hubiese tomado este ascenso, es mucha responsabilidad, si algo sale mal eres el responsable, eres la imagen del departamento y todo recae sobre tus hombros” y JUSTO AHÍ es cuando debes ser fuerte y resistir cualquier test que surja en tu camino, JUSTO AHÍ es cuando tu confianza inquebrantable entra en juego, debes ser fuerte y saber que siempre estar[as bien sin importar lo que pase, porque naciste para esto, naciste para crecer en la adversidad, toda tu vida has enfrentado momentos como estos y si alguien es capaz de llevar un gran proyecto sobre sus hombros ERES TU! Usa la presión y el calor a tu favor para forjar tu fuerza, tus valores, tus cualidades, tu confianza y sobre todas las cosas el respeto que tienes por ti mismo.
On the other hand, feminine energy must take the passengers’ seat; you can’t make it through this journey if you lack one . This energy will help you connect with others and motivate them to their best potential, it will help you make decisions when encountering gray areas, as I once read: “When facing gray areas, you should work through it as a manager and solve it as a human being.” It will also facilitate your mission of holding a team together since you are best able to spot when others aren’t feeling well, happy or heard, it gives you an edge when used in a positive way, it upscales your leadership skills to the level where all great leaders should be.
Por otro lado, tu energía femenina debe tomar el asiento del copiloto en este viaje, ya que si no tienes ambas no serás tan efectivo. Esta energía te ayudará a conectar con otros y motivarlos para alcanzar todo su potencial, te ayudará a tomar mejores decisiones cuando te encuentres en áreas grises, así como una vez leí “Cuando encuentres un problema en un área gris, analízalo como manager y resuélvelo como ser humano”. Esto también te ayudará a mantener el equipo unido ya que estás más capacitado para identificar cuando uno de los integrantes no se siente bien, feliz o escuchado, esto realmente te da una ventaja si lo usas de manera positiva, elevando de gran manera tu capacidad de liderazgo.
Feminine energy is what helps me remain centered and cold headed, which is a masculine treat, but the feminine touch is needed to balance things out. Since I work like a beast the whole day this is what makes me slow down several notches when I get home, do some journaling, some meditations, play jazz music, go for a slow walk in the park, take long showers with essential oils, crystals, and overall, anything that helps me cultivate my inner self and manage my stress levels. Always keeping in mind that the foundation of my strength comes from within, and long as I take care of this aspect and have my masculine and feminine sides in sync, I will remain effective, competent, and ready to be the beast I am when it comes to work.
La energia femenina me ayuda a mantenerme centrado y con cabeza fría, lo cual es un rasgo masculino, pero el toque femenino es necesario para balancear. Ya que trabajo como una bestia el día entero esto es lo que me hace bajar mi ritmo cuando llego a casa, ya sea con algo de journaling, escribir mis agradecimientos del día, alguna meditación, escuchar algo de jazz, tomar largas duchas con aceites esenciales, usar cristales, ir una caminata en el parque o solo sentarme afuera a contemplar la luna, en general cualquier cosa que me ayude a cultivar mi alma y manejar mis niveles de estrés, en todo momento manteniendo en mente que la base de mi fuerza viene desde adentro, y siempre y cuando me dedique a cuidar este aspecto y tener mi energía masculina y femenina en sincronía, seguiré siendo efectivo, competente y estaré listo para ser la bestia que soy cuando de trabajar se trata.
