Landscape Photography is the theme of the day and so I share with you another photo from my recent trip to Argentina. This photo is of the Upsala Glacier, a large valley glacier in Calafate, Southern Patagonia. Its higher portion lies in a disputed territory between Chile and Argentina and the glacier ends in the Lago Argentino.
Unfortunately, we could not get too close because huge chunks break off the front. The only way to get there is by boat and they all to have to stay a certain distance from the glacier due to obvious safety precautions.
As we arrived there in the early hours of the morning with the sun just rising over the mountains we were greeted by this spectacular site. The sun only rises at about 9.30, because it’s so far south, making it a little tricky for the photographers on board. But I managed to get some fairly decent shots and this is one of them.
In case you wondering about the unusual name, I know I was, the name Upsala comes from the old way of spelling Uppsala University in Sweden. This university sponsored the first glaciological studies in the area.
