An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer from the Thunder Bay Detachment is charged with sexual assault.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) received a complaint last February against police officer John Hayes.
The alleged sexual assault occurred between April 2001 and March 2002.
John Hayes is scheduled to appear on June 16 at the Thunder Bay Courthouse.
The SIU refuses to provide further comment, out of respect for the accused's right to a fair trial .
By email, the OPP states that the officer, who has over 21 years of service, is on forced leave.
