I've only been on here for maybe a month or so.
Basically, first step - write a post introducing yourself. Who are you? What are your interests? Why are you on Steemit?
Re-Introduction Write another introduction 5 to 10 mins after making your first introduction but this time upload your picture along side the re-introduction.
Start reading posts Find what you're interested in, read topics that you have an interest in and know something about.
The idea is that the rewards come not only for creating original content, but also for curating what you consider to be quality content by others (i.e., what you LIKE or upvote).
The more you use it, the more your read, the more you get the hang of it all. There is also the Steemit Chat Site which is a good place to go to ask questions.
When it comes to curating content, upvote posts that you consider to be good quality. If you don't know anything about (e.g.) sport, then don't upvote any posts about it - because it may be absolute crap. But if you do know about sport, and you read an article where the author has copied/plagiarised from the internet or posted something that is rubbish, then don't upvote (you can flag it, which is essentially a downvote I think).
As you are new to steemit and it can be hard for newcomers to boost their steem power so you should try out @MinnowPowerUp where you can earn up to 30% more steem power than just powering up through steemit! It's a subscription based daily upvote bot that draws its power from a delegation pool.
Find other writers to follow.
