We are Ivana & Snježana

astronomy teachers in Bogumil Toni Elementary School in a small Croatian town called Samobor.

What we do

Ivana is primarily a mathematics and physics teacher, while I (Snježana) am a geography teacher. We've started our school's astronomy class in year 2000. Since the kids are the key to the future, we are happy and thankful for the privilege to teach them, especially the ones who show interest in astronomy.

All together, throughout the years, we have won over fifty elementary school national astronomy competitions and have been collaborating with the Zagreb Observatory for 18 years, mostly by teaching at annual summer astronomy camps (only in Croatian).

What we'll write about

The content will be mostly about astronomy, with a possibility of occasional posts about mathematics, physics and geography.

We will cover the basics of astronomy like identification of the objects in the night sky, the facts about the known universe and objects in it, the methods and principles that were/are used to determine the laws and behaviors of nature and historical events and figures that contributed to what we as humankind know today! We will share a number of small projects and excercises that we teach, for example how to make a time cylinder, use the stars for orientation and navigation, make and use the star clock and many others!

Finally..

We'll leave you with this quote:

“The amazing thing is that every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded, because the elements - the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution - weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars, and the only way they could get into your body is if those stars were kind enough to explode. So, forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today.”
-Lawrence M. Krauss, A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather Than Nothing

P.S. Ok, maybe don't forget Jesus, the Biblical stories help and helped the people with understanding the soul which is a whole another universe. However, we won't go into that and stick to the astronomy, and the fact that the stars died so that we could be here today :-)

All in all thanks for reading and, if you're also interested in astronomy, follow us!
Have a nice day and may the nuclear force hold us together! :-)
