Canada Bars Venezuelan Voters

In thinly veiled support of the US attempts to regime-change Venezuela’s elected government, Canada has decided to block about 5000 expat Venezuelans living in Canada from voting on Sunday, and prohibited the installation of polling stations in Venezuelan embassies and consulates.

They justified this draconian action by calling Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro a dictator. Responding to Canada's decision Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza questioned who was acting the dictator in this instance.

Canada has been active in the Lima Group, an organization of Latin American countries that seek to destabilize the Maduro government, and indicated that if Maduro won, which he is a favorite to do, Canada would not recognize the election.

Venezuela requested UN observers to monitor the election, but the request was opposed by that country's opposition. In the past, Venezuelan elections have been cited by external observers for their transparency and efficiency, including by ex-US president Jimmy Carter who noted that the Venezuelan " voting system ... makes verifying results" easy. In the system that they have been using since 2004 each vote is stored electronically and backed up with a paper receipt.

Apparently Canada hasn't read about Carter's experience, or chooses to ignore it.
