Ivory Museum of Nizams

Nizams were the rulers of a princely state, Hyderabad in the Indian Subcontinent. They relinquished the power at the time of independence when Hyderabad joined the India. However, the lifestyle of Nizam’s is still cherished and remembered in the Hyderabad. The Nizams were famous for many things; lavish lifestyle, beautiful architecture and Food. Among the lesser known facts was their love for the Ivory Carvings especially of Elephant Tusks. They brought carvers and artists from China, South Asia to make beautiful masterpieces.

The Nizams have a museum for all these Ivory carvings in Hyderabad. Most of these contain the images of Buddhism and Western Culture like British influence. This is seen due to the Artists homeland and Closeness of Nizams with Britian.

These are so intricately carved that ones mind just can’t comprehend the minute details in the ivory horn. The craftsmanship and the art is preserved in the Museum.

Some other specimens contain the social life of the Indian People and their culture especially Indian Village life. Some of these images are in the terracotta clay and in the ceramic also.
