Ugadi - New Year

Ugadi is the new year day of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra states of India. It generally occurs during March or April according to Gregorian calendar.

On this day, we wake up early in the morning, put rangoli on floor. Rangoli is art form of patterns which are drawn with white color powder and filled with various colors. People buy new clothes and wear them on this day, offer prayers to God and visit temple.

After the prayers, people usually read almanac for the upcoming year which lists various information based on our astrological signs. It also predicts rainfall of the year, eclipses and country's affairs.

Now my favorite part of any festival is special food. On Ugadi, people prepare poli or bobatlu with is a form of sweet and Ugadi pachadi which is like a juice made of mango, neem, tamarind, dry fruits, jaggery and each of them has varied taste which signifies our life. Like our life will have different tastes like sadness, surprises, sweetness, etc.

So, today, March 18th is Ugadi and is called Vilambhi Nama Samvatsaram, which is the name of the year.

So, here are few pictures of how I celebrated Ugadi.
