The festival of Good Fortune

Today is Dhanteras, a very important day which is one of the days of Diwali festival. It marks the beginning of Diwali festival, though now a days the celebrations start much earlier and keeps going on for days even after few days of Diwali. I miss being in India during this time, but anyways here in Muscat also we have quite a lot of celebrations. We have Diwali parties at our Hindu friends homes and that completes the festival vibe.

Dhanteras is the day which is dedicated to wealth and prosperity and hence we believe that buying Gold, silver or any other precious metal is auspicious on this day. Majority of the Indian buy Gold on this day and then there are rituals to be done with prayers, which is done to bring in abundance into our homes. It is a day devoted to Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi for good health and wealth. It is a festival of renewal and growth.

I too do these rituals, it is a tradition of my home to buy Gold every year, even if it is just 1 gram, but I do buy and then do the rituals around it. Makes me feel good following these traditions which are passed to us from our ancestors and we will pass it on to our next generation and hopefully they too will do the same to keep these traditions going. These traditions give us hope and renewed energy, they bring us joy and love.

This week I have some friends come over from India and staying with me, so it's a hectic week but I will do my things in a small and quick way to not miss it.

I wish all my Indian friends a very Happy Dhanteras and may there always be good health, wealth and great fortune in everyone's life.
