How to draw lips! ( Step by step)

Drawing lips/mouth can be a real challenge because they can either make or break your face drawing. I want to show you how you can create a nice pair of lips with a few simple steps.

You have to remember that not everything needs to be perfect to look good. There is no good or wrong way in drawing so just give it your best shot! And like always, the more you do it the better you will get at it. Personally, I always struggle with lips as well but with these few guide lines and starters it has become a tad more easy!

* Start with a straight line and add a curve in the middle on top. Draw a curving line to give the idea of the lower lip. Don't think too much about putting the lines perfect you can shape them later when need be!

* The line for the upper lip looks in my eyes like an M so I call the an M line. If you look at your own lips your can see that as well. Again no need to have it look perfect right away.

* The next step is to close the lines of the lips so you really start to see the shape of a mouth/lips. In the middle you now start to shape where you want to see the teeth coming. With a smile you always see part of the teeth.

* Above the middle of the upper lip you can draw a few dark lines to highlight where the nose would start and to add more detail in your drawing. Add lines on the lips and let them flow so you will make the lips more real. Do not use straight lines but let them curve like the shape of a real round lip.

Now the coloring starts or shading as some will call it.

*I always start with the outlines and darken them a little up!

* use your pencil to color in the lips with a soft grey! Softly brush your pencil over the paper to leave just a little bit of color! If you make them to dark it won't look good. Pressing harder and softer on your pencil on a piece of paper will teach you how to be able to get more shades from one pencil.

* Make the middle line darker and put more pressure on your pencil down the lips. You can use your finger tip to wipe or take away too much grey! Never be scared to touch your drawing and to use your fingers as tools. Better to get dirty fingers than a bad drawing :D

* The last step is to darken the lower lip some more and to put some more shading on the upper lip. The upper lip is always a tad lighter than the lower lip but don't make the lower lip black! Know when to stop even when your feelings will tell you are never done! You can use a eraser to reshape the form of your lips. I used it for the lower lip as you can see on the picture below.

I hope you will try to draw some lips! It would be amazing to see some results here on Steemit! If you want to know more or have a question feel free to comment and ask or contact me on steem chat. My name there is also Poeticsnake.
