Well, when I read @worldbuilder's prompt for the _Worldbuilding Prompt 1136 - Tough Situation_ challenge, which says: "Write about a tough situation. How is it solved? What caused it?" I didn't have to recall distant events, invent any broken world, or imagine science fiction scenarios 😅. My mind went straight to what we are experiencing in #Venezuela. It has now been exactly one month since that June 24th, when the ground beneath our feet decided to move like never before in our recent memory. What we are left with is not simply "a difficult situation." It is something that surpasses any words we try to use to describe it.

There are nearly 18,000 injured. And almost 20,000 people who lost their homes and are now in temporary camps, staying with relatives, or simply waiting to find out if they can return to the building where they lived. These aren't just numbers. They're neighbors. They're families who used to have dinner together, watch the same soap opera, and greet each other in the elevator. And now, a month later, many of those families are separated by rubble that still hasn't moved 😞. The material destruction is of unimaginable proportions. Authorities have reported around 190 buildings completely collapsed and more than 850 with varying degrees of damage. But NASA satellite analysis suggests that the actual number of affected structures could be closer to 60,000 nationwide. The difference between what you see walking down the street and what you see from the sky is enormous, and that tells us the problem is much bigger than it appears at first glance. The UN, for its part, has estimated the direct material damage at around $37 billion. To give you an idea: that represents more than 40% of Venezuela's gross domestic product. It's not a small figure. It's a huge hole in the economy of a country that was already struggling before the earthquake. And the situation is far from over. New figures emerge every day, more remains are found among the rubble every day. We still haven't been able to accurately count the number of people injured or killed, and it hurts to admit that. What the chasm caused: 39 seconds that split the country in two. ---------------------------------------------------------------- So, what happened, in simple terms? On June 24, at 6:04 p.m., a first earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck. Just 39 seconds later—less than a minute, imagine—came the second, of magnitude 7.5. This second tremor was the most violent, the one that truly caused the most damage. The epicenter was near San Felipe and Montalbán, in the Yaracuy and Carabobo region, in the north-central part of the country. But the impact was felt from Trujillo to Miranda. The hardest-hit areas were Caracas and, above all, the state of La Guaira, where the percentage of damaged buildings was staggering. It was a "seismic double-header": two large earthquakes, almost one after the other, that amplified each other. This is not a common occurrence. And the underlying cause, as geologists explain, has to do with the collision between the South American and Caribbean tectonic plates. That border that runs right beneath us accumulates pressure for years, for decades, and then suddenly releases it all at once. It's that simple, and that devastating. In less than a minute, thousands of lives changed forever.

And although we are far from seeing an end to it, there are already tasks underway that deserve to be reported. ### International Aid Was Immediate In the first few days, more than 3,000 rescuers from at least 33 countries arrived in Venezuela. Urban search and rescue teams, with trained dogs, with technology to detect signs of life under the rubble. Countries like Spain, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, France, Switzerland, China, the United States, Argentina, Italy, and many others made their equipment and personnel available. The European Union activated its Civil Protection Mechanism. The UN released emergency funds and deployed assessment teams. UNICEF estimated that some 680,000 children need assistance. The World Food Programme has been distributing food kits in Catia La Mar and Naiguatá. The Venezuelan Red Cross set up a field hospital in La Guaira stadium and plans a two-year operation to treat more than 300,000 people. Humanitarian aid, according to reports, exceeds The international community has already contributed $780 million. And it was announced that Venezuela will have access to some $346 million of its own resources, currently frozen at the IMF, to boost reconstruction. Every little helps, although there is still a huge gap between what is needed and what is available 💪. ### Volunteering: When the People Mobilize This is something that deeply moved me. From day one, thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets to help. They didn't wait for instructions. They didn't wait for permits. They organized themselves. A registration center was set up at the Poliedro de Caracas to coordinate the volunteers who wanted to go to La Guaira. Each person received a credential with a QR code, was assigned according to their specialty—doctors, rescuers, engineers, cooks, whatever—and was sent wherever needed. There were citizen groups like "Pónte las pilas" (Get Your Act Together), which brought together hundreds of people coordinating via WhatsApp where to go, what to bring, and what was needed. Collections of food, water, hygiene products, clothing, and medicine were organized. Community kitchens appeared out of nowhere in the shelters. People left their jobs, their homes, their routines, to lend a hand. The solidarity of Venezuelans is real. And it was evident. And it continues to be evident every day 🤝. ### The Government's Response: Missions, Funds, and Commissions On the government side, the interim president announced the creation of the Great Mission Venezuela Reborn, a program that brings together several existing missions (Barrio Nuevo Barrio Tricolor, Juntos Todo es Posible, Venezuela Bella) to focus them on the recovery of housing and infrastructure. The Presidential Commission for the Habitability Assessment of Housing and Infrastructure was activated, temporary camps were created—currently there are nearly 100 operating, housing more than 20,000 people—and a monthly financing program was announced for the most affected families for six months. A ban on the export of construction materials was also decreed to ensure that everything remains within the country for reconstruction. Some things have been done well, others came late, and many are still lacking. But the state apparatus, although slow and with its contradictions, is in motion. ### The Engineers: Reviewing House by House, Building by Building This is one of the parts I'm most interested in sharing because it's a silent but fundamental task. Nearly 3,200 professionals—civil engineers, architects, geologists, and advanced students—have joined inspection brigades that travel through the affected areas, evaluating every building, every house, every structure. They work in coordination with the Venezuelan College of Engineers and the Presidential Commission. They use an international system called the "traffic light" system: * 🟢 **Green**: The building is habitable. No significant damage. * 🟡 **Yellow**: It has moderate damage, restricted use. Requires further review. * 🔴 **Red**: Severe damage, imminent risk. Entry is prohibited until more detailed studies are conducted. So far, nearly 7,000 buildings have been evaluated in La Guaira. Of these, about half received a green label, a quarter yellow, and another quarter red. In Caracas, most of the buildings reviewed received green or yellow labels, which is good news amidst so much suffering. And note that a red label does not automatically mean demolition. Buildings marked in red move to a second phase of evaluation by specialized teams and structural pathologists, who decide whether they can be repaired, restored, or, ultimately, demolished. There was also a wonderful initiative from the diaspora: a group of Venezuelans in Spain created a digital platform called "Sismo Ayuda VE" (Earthquake Aid VE), where more than 1,200 volunteer professionals remotely assess the affected buildings using photos and videos. Technology at the service of reconstruction 💡. ### Debris Removal: Getting Rid of the Pain Removing debris isn't as simple as sending in a backhoe. Every slab, every piece of concrete, could contain human remains. That's why the process must be careful, respectful, and follow protocols. More than 100 pieces of heavy machinery have been deployed. In La Guaira, the internal roads were cleared in the first few days, with crews working nonstop until dawn. And the reconstruction has already begun: there are buildings where workers are working 24 hours a day, like at "Los Ojos de Chávez" on Bolívar Avenue in Caracas, where 150 workers are rebuilding walls and facades while residents wait in a temporary encampment across the street. The Unseen Reconstruction: The Pain That Can't Be Described ----------------------------------------------------------- There's something I think is important to say, because sometimes we get stuck on the numbers and the structures, and we forget what really matters. The emotional and psychological reconstruction is probably The most difficult challenge of all. How do you explain to a child that their home no longer exists? How do you sleep peacefully in a room again when you felt the building sway like a ship? How do you comfort a mother who lost her child in the rubble? There are people still sleeping on the street, next to what was once their building, for fear of aftershocks. A month has passed, and the ground still trembles from time to time. Nearly a thousand aftershocks have been recorded since June 24th. A thousand. Imagine living with that constant anxiety, day after day, night after night 😟. The Red Cross and other organizations are providing psychological support in shelters. But that barely scratches the surface of the collective trauma we are carrying as a country. The emotional wound is deeper than any crack in a wall. And there's a cultural aspect to it, too. Venezuelans are about building community. About dancing in the midst of chaos. About cracking jokes when everything is wrong. But this time, the magnitude of the pain is so great that not even humor can mask it. And that's okay. We don't always have to smile. Sometimes we have to cry first in order to rebuild later.

The honest answer is that it isn't resolved. Not completely. Not yet. It's being resolved piecemeal. In stages. First the rescue, then the assessment, then the removal, then the repair, and eventually the reconstruction. And in parallel, the grieving, the mental health, the return to routine, the rebuilding of the social fabric. What I can say is that the answer to this difficult situation doesn't come from just one place. It comes from the international rescuers who crossed half the world to help us. It comes from the engineer who put on his hard hat and went out to inspect buildings without charging a single bolivar. It comes from the woman who cooked a hundred arepas for the volunteers. It comes from the government that, with its successes and its missteps, activated response mechanisms. It comes from the countries that contributed their money and their people. It comes from the diaspora that hasn't forgotten where it comes from. And it comes, above all, from us. From the Venezuelans who decided that this won't break us. Pues bien, cuando leí la propuesta de @worldbuilder para el reto _Worldbuilding Prompt 1136 - Tough Situation_, que dice: "Describe una situación difícil. ¿Cómo se resuelve? ¿Qué la causó?", no tuve que recordar cosas lejanas, ni inventar ningún mundo roto, ni imaginar escenarios de ciencia ficción 😅. Mi mente fue directa a lo que estamos viviendo en #Venezuela. Y es que ya se cumplió exactamente un mes desde aquel 24 de junio, cuando el suelo bajo nuestros pies decidió moverse como nunca antes lo había hecho en nuestra memoria reciente. Lo que nos ha quedado encima no es simplemente "una situación difícil". Es algo que rebasa cualquier palabra que intentemos usar para describirlo.

Hay cerca de 18.000 heridos. Y casi 20.000 personas que perdieron su hogar y hoy están en campamentos transitorios, en casas de familiares, o sencillamente esperando saber si pueden volver a entrar al edificio donde vivían. No son números. Son vecinos. Son familias que cenaban juntas, que veían la misma novela, que se saludaban en el ascensor. Y ahora, un mes después, muchas de esas familias están separadas por un escombro que todavía no se ha movido 😞. La destrucción material es de proporciones que cuesta imaginar. Las autoridades han reportado alrededor de 190 edificios colapsados por completo y más de 850 con distintos niveles de daño. Pero los análisis satelitales de la NASA sugieren que la cifra real de estructuras afectadas podría acercarse a las 60.000 en todo el país. La diferencia entre lo que se ve caminando por la calle y lo que se ve desde el cielo es enorme, y eso nos dice que el problema es mucho más grande de lo que parece a simple vista. La ONU, por su parte, ha estimado los daños materiales directos en unos 37.000 millones de dólares. Para que te hagas una idea: eso representa más del 40% del producto interno bruto de Venezuela. No es una cifrita. Es un hueco enorme en la economía de un país que ya venía arrastrando dificultades desde antes de que la tierra temblara. Y la situación está lejos de cerrarse. Cada día salen nuevas cifras, cada día se encuentran más restos entre los escombros. La cantidad de gente herida o muerta todavía no hemos logrado terminarla de contar con precisión, y eso duele reconocerlo. Lo que causó el foso: 39 segundos que partieron el país en dos -------------------------------------------------------------- ¿Y qué fue lo que pasó, en términos simples? El 24 de junio, a las 6:04 de la tarde, se registró un primer sismo de magnitud 7,2. Apenas 39 segundos después —menos de un minuto, imagínate— llegó el segundo, de magnitud 7,5. Y aunque estamos lejos de verle un fin, ya hay tareas en marcha que merecen ser contadas. ### \* La ayuda internacional no se hizo esperar En los primeros días, llegaron a Venezuela más de 3.000 rescatistas de al menos 33 países. Equipos de búsqueda y rescate urbano, con perros entrenados, con tecnología para detectar signos de vida bajo los escombros. Países como España, México, Chile, Colombia, Francia, Suiza, China, Estados Unidos, Argentina, Italia y muchos otros pusieron sus equipos y su gente a disposición. Desde el primer día, miles de venezolanos salieron a la calle a ayudar. No esperaron instrucciones. No esperaron permisos. Se organizaron. Se habilitó un centro de registro en el Poliedro de Caracas para coordinar a los voluntarios que querían ir a La Guaira. Cada persona recibía una credencial con código QR, se le asignaba según su especialidad —médicos, rescatistas, ingenieros, cocineros, lo que fuera— y se le enviaba donde hiciera falta. Hubo grupos ciudadanos como "Pónte las pilas", que reunió a cientos de personas coordinando por WhatsApp adónde ir, qué llevar, qué faltaba. Recolectas de alimentos, agua, productos de higiene, ropa, medicamentos. Cocinas comunitarias que aparecieron de la nada en los refugios. Casi 3.200 profesionales —ingenieros civiles, arquitectos, geólogos, estudiantes avanzados— se han sumado a brigadas de inspección que recorren las zonas afectadas evaluando cada edificio, cada casa, cada estructura. Trabajan en coordinación con el Colegio de Ingenieros de Venezuela y con la Comisión Presidencial. Usan un sistema internacional llamado "del semáforo": * 🟢 **Verde**: la edificación es habitable. Sin daños comprometedores. * 🟡 **Amarillo**: tiene daños moderados, uso restringido. Requiere revisión más profunda. * 🔴 **Rojo**: daño severo, riesgo inminente. No se puede entrar hasta que se hagan estudios más detallados. Hasta ahora, en La Guaira se han evaluado casi 7.000 edificaciones. De esas, alrededor de la mitad recibió etiqueta verde, una cuarta parte amarillo, y otra cuarta parte rojo. En Caracas, la mayoría de los edificios revisados salieron en verde o amarillo, lo cual es una buena noticia en medio de tanto dolor. Y ojo, porque la etiqueta roja no significa automáticamente demolición. Los edificios en rojo pasan a una segunda fase de evaluación a cargo de brigadas especializadas y patólogos estructurales, que son los que deciden si se puede reparar, restaurar o, en última instancia, demoler. También hubo una iniciativa hermosa desde la diáspora: un grupo de venezolanos en España creó una plataforma digital llamada "Sismo Ayuda VE", donde más de 1.200 profesionales voluntarios evalúan a distancia, mediante fotos y videos, los inmuebles afectados. La tecnología al servicio de la reconstrucción 💡. ### \* Remoción de escombros: sacar lo que duele Quitar los escombros no es tan simple como mandar una retroexcavadora. Cada placa, cada pedazo de concreto, puede contener restos humanos. Por eso el proceso tiene que ser cuidadoso, respetuoso y seguir protocolos. Se han desplegado más de 100 equipos de maquinaria pesada. En La Guaira, las vías internas fueron despejadas en los primeros días, trabajando sin parar hasta la madrugada. Y la reconstrucción ya empezó: hay edificios donde los obreros trabajan 24 horas al día, como en "Los Ojos de Chávez" en la avenida Bolívar de Caracas, donde 150 trabajadores reconstruyen muros y fachadas mientras los residentes esperan en un campamento temporal enfrente. La reconstrucción que no se ve: el dolor que no cabe en una etiqueta -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hay algo que me parece importante decir, porque a veces nos quedamos en los números y en las estructuras, y olvidamos lo que de verdad pesa. La reconstrucción emocional y psicológica es probablemente el reto más difícil de todos. ¿Cómo le explicas a un niño que su casa ya no existe? ¿Cómo vuelves a dormir tranquilo en un cuarto cuando sentiste que el edificio se movía como un barco? ¿Cómo le haces a una madre que perdió a su hijo entre los escombros? Hay gente que todavía duerme en la calle, al lado de lo que fue su edificio, por miedo a las réplicas. Ha pasado un mes y el suelo sigue temblando de vez en cuando, con suficiente intensidad como para dar algún susto. Se han registrado casi mil réplicas desde el 24 de junio. Mil. Imagínate vivir con ese sobresalto constante, día tras día, noche tras noche 😟. La Cruz Roja y otras organizaciones están prestando atención psicológica en los refugios. Pero eso apenas raspa la superficie del trauma colectivo que estamos cargando como país. La herida emocional es más profunda que cualquier grieta en una pared. Y hay algo cultural, también. Los venezolanos somos de construir comunidad. De bailar en medio del caos. De echar chiste cuando todo está mal. Pero esta vez, la magnitud del dolor es tan grande que ni el humor alcanza para taparlo. Y eso está bien. No siempre hay que sonreír. A veces hay que llorar primero para poder reconstruir después.

La respuesta honesta es que no se resuelve. No del todo. No todavía. Se va resolviendo por partes. Por etapas. Primero el rescate, luego la evaluación, después la remoción, después la reparación y, eventualmente, la reconstrucción. Y en paralelo, el duelo, la salud mental, la vuelta a la rutina, la reconstrucción del tejido social. Lo que sí puedo decir es que la respuesta a esta situación difícil no viene de un solo lugar. Viene de los rescatistas internacionales que cruzaron medio mundo para ayudarnos. Viene del ingeniero que se puso el casco y salió a revisar edificios sin cobrar un bolívar. Viene de la señora que cocinó cien arepas para los voluntarios. Viene del gobierno que, con sus aciertos y sus tropiezos, activó mecanismos de respuesta. Viene de los países que pusieron su dinero y su gente. Viene de la diáspora que no olvidó de dónde viene. Y viene, sobre todo, de nosotros. De los venezolanos que decidimos que esto no nos va a quebrar. Que sobre el dolor, sobre el alma herida, Venezuela va a renacer. No sé cuánto tiempo va a tomar. Meses, años, quizás una generación entera. Pero lo que sí sé es que un mes después del terremoto, la situación sigue siendo difícil, sigue sin resolverse del todo y sigue siendo la realidad que nos tocó vivir. Y sin embargo, seguimos aquí. Seguimos sacando escombros. Seguimos revisando paredes. Seguimos abrazando al que lo necesita.
