Plot
The movie begins with a short monologue by our protagonist, Happy Gilmore. He tells us that ever since he was a child, he’s inherited his father’s love and passion for ice hockey and has been playing it ever since. His father taught him the “trick” to making a perfect shot, but otherwise, Happy was never a great hockey player. When he was just a child, he lost his father in an incident that occurred during a hockey game, and, having lost his mother as well, he went to live with his grandmother. As an adult, he continued to pursue his dreams of playing hockey despite his lack of skill, but everything will suddenly change because of a single phone call.

As unsurprising as it may be, I like this second Adam Sandler film—in which he plays the lead—much more than his first, Billy Madison. The reasons for this vary quite a bit: there’s the difference in humor, the performances, the story, and even Sandler’s lead role in this film. But the first reason that came to mind when I thought about this is that *Happy Gilmore* was one of the movies that aired most often on TV when I was a kid. It seems that, even with all its jokes and adult elements, it was a movie that seemed appropriate to watch with the family. But anyway, despite what the vast majority of people think about Adam Sandler’s movies and his very distinctive brand of humor, I admit that this is the kind of movie that still has me in stitches today, no matter how old it is. And that’s not surprising, since these are the kinds of movies I watched the most when I was just a kid. Just to give you an idea of the kind of humor I like, here’s this movie.

The main character is a very immature, troubled, grumpy, and temperamental young man who dreams of becoming an ice hockey player. However, he’s terrible at the game—so much so that he doesn’t even know how to skate properly and ends up constantly getting into fights with everyone. One morning, though, he receives an unexpected call from his grandmother—who raised him since he was a child after he lost his father—asking him to come home. When he arrives at the house, he sees that they’re clearing out all his belongings, and Happy tries to stop them. When he asks for an explanation, a man in a suit tells him that his grandmother owes money to the government for failing to pay her taxes for years. The IRS representative tells him that if she doesn’t pay the $270,000 she owes the government, the house will be foreclosed on. Happy has no choice but to take his grandmother to a sort of nursing home, where it becomes clear that things aren’t as peaceful as they seem. Later, while trying to watch his ice hockey game, he gets into a bet to see if he can hit the ball far with a golf club—which he manages to do more than once.

What I like about this movie is its story, which I find easier to follow and enjoy because the protagonist isn’t a complete idiot like the one in Billy Madison—he’s a spirited young man with a dream who’s doing everything he can to help his beloved grandmother, the only family he has. Maybe it’s because he lost his father as a child and never had a mother, or maybe it’s simply because he’s a poor guy who turns to hockey as his only option—since that’s what he thinks he’s good at—and he doesn’t last long at any other job either. Now that I think about it, given where I am in my life right now, I feel like I can relate to this character more quickly than ever before, to be honest. And I like that, because he’s not the spoiled son of a billionaire who lets him do whatever he wants—no, he’s someone who takes responsibility for his own actions, even when almost everything he does ends up going wrong.

Lo que me gusta de esta película es su historia, la cual se me hace más fácil de seguir y disfrutar ya que no se trata de un idiota como el que vemos en Billy Madison, sino que es un chico temperamental y con un sueño que intenta hacer lo posible para ayudar a su querida abuela, la única familia que tiene. Tal vez sea por esto, porque perdió a su padre cuando niño y nunca tuvo madre o porque simplemente es un pobre hombre que recurre únicamente al hockey porque es lo que cree saber hacer bien ya que tampoco dura mucho en ningún otro trabajo. Ahora que lo pienso, actualmente como me encuentro yo siento que me puedo identificar más rápido con este personaje que nunca, la verdad. Y eso me gusta, porque no vemos que sea hijo de un multimillonario que lo malcría y deja que haga lo que le dé la gana, no, es alguien que se hace cargo de sus propias acciones, aún cuando casi todo lo que hace termina mal.

Anyway, that’s what I personally think about this excellent and entertaining story in the movie, which I consider better than many people realize. Claro, supongo que este tipo de humor fue el que más me acostumbré a ver desde pequeño.

Especially the zoom style and tracking shots we see when the protagonist hits the golf ball. The sound effects are also excellent, as is the ’80s soundtrack. Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the comedy genre is concerned.

El estilo de dirección y producción en esta cinta de comedia es un poco mejor, con efectos visuales y estilos de movimientos más interactivos. Sobre todo el estilo de zoom y efectos de desplazamiento que vemos cuando el protagonista lanza la pelota de golf. Los efectos de sonido también son excelentes, al igual que la banda sonora ochentera que tiene. Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia.
