After a long month of couch-surfing with a family of 5 trying to find a home just weeks before the birth of our little tribe’s newest edition, our rental application for this fully solar-powered Purple Palace was approved.
Listen, I’m a musician.
I don’t fit the type of hebetudinous profiling that real estate agents like.
Work is sporadic, unstable and often under the table (so there’s little written proof). Plus there are lots of musicians who don’t do it professionally and don’t make a living from it or that just fit into a down-and-out artist cliche that creates a negative misperception of financial viability for the rest of us.
Expect lots of didge and guitar to be played on this deck!
In our case, we’d saved more than enough to cover the first few months of rent upfront plus bond, even with the exorbitant weekly rates that are present in one of Australia’s most coveted areas, but even that wasn’t suffice for their intransigent protocols.
Plus we have young kids and a pet cat in an area where landlords have a strictly no pets (and unofficially a no kids) policy.
You see! Right in the middle of this luscious rainforest valley, with our own springfed creeks, waterfalls and swimming holes!
Rejection after rejection, the odds seemed stacked heavily against us, but I did some research and found a way to contact the landlord of this particular house directly, rather than rely on communication through the real estate agent gatekeeper.
I struck up a rapport with him and it began to get things rolling.
Then I met with the owner of the real estate agency and struck a rapport with him and that’s what really kicked the ball over the line.
Look, it may have been that I just had gotten him on a good day, rather than me having won him over using any sagacious wit or rakish charm, but whether the stars aligned or not, we got it!
We can move in on the 20th of August. A mere 7 days before baby is due!
It’s cutting it fine!
But I feel that a mixture of synchronicity and persistent focus granted us some last minute grace and blessed us with an incredible home.
It’s friggin pricey, I must say, but I can make it work so that my family are happy and supported.
