Welcome to Foolery Lane Farm

Welcome to Foolery Lane Farm, where there are no stupid questions, no true mistakes, always something to do, we're learning all the time, and there is never dull moment!

Our little homestead that we affectionately all Foolery Lane Farm is 40 acres (16h) on the outskirts of town. Originally a cow paddock that was subdivided it is zoned for commercial farming, it had nearly no topsoil, terrible pasture, Gorse, Patterson's Curse, thistles, 3 dead gum trees and a garbage pit. We looked at it and thought it was perfect!
Don't let distance fool you, that gorse is 2m high!
Don't let distance fool you, that gorse is 2m high!

Of course, we didn't know a thing about Gorse, in my mind it looked like Wattle, Patterson's Curse was just a pretty flower and what harm could possibly come from a couple of thistles? Being in the bottom of a valley, with a seasonal creek would mean we wouldn’t have a water shortage! We had never heard of a wind tunnel outside of a theme park and didn’t know what an endangered indigenous native plant was no wonder what care they might need? We had no idea that there were different types of grass no wonder about the concept of pasture and an Environmental Overlay and being part of a Greenbelt could only be a good thing right?

They aren't our cows, the neighbour just hadn't fixed the fence!

Sometimes youthful ignorance is a blessing, as if we knew then any of what we know now, we probably wouldn't have bought our little piece of paradise. It was going to take 3 years for us to be able to build a shed, 7 years to build a house and we are yet to get to a stage where we can keep anything other than a couple of dogs but each month, each year, our little homestead is growing.

We have more mistakes than successes, we underestimate challenges, we dream big and fight to get there and hopefully others can learn from our mistakes the way we do and maybe you guys can even give us a little help along the way to become, healthier, happier, self-sufficient, and maybe a little more odd, if that's even possible.

Till Next Time
